I really don't like being the clothes police

After 12 years of public education, four years as an undergraduate at Springfield College, three years of night school for my masters, and three years  at UNH to get my CAGS, who would have thought my job would be defined by yoga pants in a thumbs down in the HLN.

One of the things I really don't like about my job is dealing with the dress code.  The way I think of this is that any school is a place of business.  It is the business of education.  While it is really great to find ways to express yourself, there are times when things are appropriate and when they are not.  Clothes that reveal too much of anything, whether it is undergarments or a person's form, is not appropriate in this business environment.  It is a distraction for some and has led to some really ugly comments and potential bullying between students.

I also realize that not all yoga pants are created equally.  If these garments are loose at the knee and on the thigh they are fine.

I know that dealing with these rules is a hassle for many students as well as parents but my real concern is creating an environment that is appropriate for this environment.  If students want to have changes considered, the Student Council is the place to start.  They meet every Thursday in room 315.

Enjoy the snow day.

  2. I dont understand why people are complaining so much because honestly it takes just as much time to put on a pair of jeans then it does to put on yoga pants or leggings. Also I would like to say how happy I was when you banned leggings as pants. THANK YOU! Its gross I really dont feel like walking down the hallway seeing butts. Or boobs for the matter, thats really gross too. I don't understand why people can't just deal, its life. You wouldnt be able to dress like that at a job so why are you going to dress like that at school. I think the dress code is completly reasonable and thank you for keeping the school one bit closer to no bullying. :)

  3. For one thing i have to say the yoga pants ban is rediculous and myu daughter happens to wear hollister sweat pants because she is comfortable in them and not in jeans. Now to go out of my way and have to buy her new cothes is unnecessary if i wanted to my daughter to go to a private dresscode school i would have sent her to one. These unbelieveable abolishing new dress bans are horrid. Yes i understand that it is distracting when a shapely girl wears something that defines her figure but that is human nature, we have these curves because we are women. If god wanted us to be boards im sure he would of made us boards. Tell me if i sent my daughter in a potato sack finger tips and collarbone and it was distracting other students and causing bullying to her, would you ban potato sacks too! What if that was all i could afford? If you want our children to wear uniforms then put them in uniforms. My daughter has came home in tears because she is very shapely and she will get introuble for somthing and her bestfriend who is a twig doesnt. Because you people dont understand how to accept the human development. I would love to talk about more but the next time i get a call for my daughter violating the dress code, and i checked her that morning, you will be recieving a visit from the media.(:

  6. Its not that big of a deal with the whole yoga pants issue. But people should have the choice to whether or not where yoga pants. They're sweat pants, there not skin tight like leggings of jeggings. But no matter what it is UNNECCESSARY to bring in the media.

  7. I'm delighted AHS has a dress code. Thank you Mr Lane for enforcing it and all that you do for Alvirne and its students. You have a tough job and the majority of parents I know greatly appreciate your efforts, despite the occasional unwarranted thumbs down. Thank YOU and keep up the good work!
